Close to 40% of the landfills in Metro Atlanta are filled with wasted food!

Burying organic waste in landfill is a problem and it’s not just because of the resources we lose. When organic waste is dumped in landfill, it undergoes anaerobic decomposition (because of the lack of oxygen) and generates methane. When released into the atmosphere, methane is a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Wasted food could also be diverted as feedstock or directly treated to make compost and soil.

Backyard composting

Many Chamblee residents have backyards, with space to put a large compost bin and area’s to keep leaves and grass clippings. It is a pretty easy process, where food waste is layered with ‘browns’ like leaves or wood chips.
